Flexi Classic Compact 3 Review – Retractable 5 Meter Leash for Large Dogs

February 1st, 2011 · No Comments

The Flexi classic compact 3 is a retractable 5 meter leash which comes in different sizes and leash length, for different sized dogs, I’ve bought it for my Libi which is a medium sized Lab, about 30kg. It’s a good brand choice for those who need a quality leash, it doesn’t tangle and is easy and smooth to operate. Plastic shell is super tough. You can press a button and stop the leash extending (if you approach a cross walk or whatever reason). The leash itself is thin but very strong in regular use, and is unstretchable. That being said, it’s very thin so it can be chewed easily by the dog, for ex. you tie the leash to a tree when you’re seating somewhere, the dog makes a turn, the leash is tangled, dog it annoyed and you’re not paying attention, he chews the leash…takes a second to rip it…

My Libi is a mixed breed, Lab and maybe a Golden, she was born Sep 2010.

One more suggestion use a harness instead of a collar, it is more convenient for the dog, it doesn’t apply stress on the neck area but rather the shoulder blades, especially when pulling from the side. I do not let Libi sleep with the harness, because it is not ventilated in the body areas it covers (under the armpits for ex.), so I put it on only when we go out.

A Tip: Does your dog pull on the leash while you walk him? You’ve probably tried pulling back, and other kinds of “tricks”, but the more you try , it seems the dog tries harder to pull. The solution is – use a short leash, let the dog walk beside you. Whenever the dog starts pulling, STOP WALKING. You’ll notice something interesting happens that moment: the dog will probably look at you to see what’s going on. At that point, if the dog is ahead of you, pull him a bit backward and continue walking. You’ll be amazed how good it works. Anyway remember that this is usually a thing with young dogs, as they get older they pull less and less…

Sooner than later the dog learns a valuable lesson – if you pull, you are not going anywhere!

Some people suggest walking the other way, the moment your dog is pulling. But I think you should teach your dog to behave in normal and ordinary situations. In everyday life, you just don’t walk back and forth. It’s not fun, you get  dizzy, the dog might think it’s some kind of a game (mine did, got her excited instead of the opposite).  I think this method is not too good, if any.

It took me about 15 minutes to see first results with my 3.5 months Labrador, and by the next day her behavior changed completely. it was like walking a different dog.
