In one of my previous posts I’ve wrote about the high prices of hotels in Manhattan. There are mostly two options, one is staying in a good hotel with good reviews and references, average star rate (but yet clean and with a private bathroom). But, this can cost you big bucks, sometimes even more than 250$ a night.
On the other hand, other choices are budget hotels that charge “only” 160$ per night but offer a quite a funky room, not clean and not so pleasant to stay in.
So, is there any other alternative? Yes. Stay outside of Manhattan.
I have stayed at the Fairfield Inn (part of Marriot Hotel Chain) at East Rutherford, NJ. Located 10 miles from Manhattan, close to the Lincoln Tunnel. The hotel is located on a quiet side of the entertainment area, a few miles from the Giants stadium. This is a very nice and tidy Hotel, and for a reasonable price you get a very clean 2 bed bedroom, a private bathroom and a great breakfast at the nice dining room.
Bus from Hotel to Port authority central bus station in Manhattan is available about every 15 minutes in the bus station located 50 meters from the hotel.
- From the hotel To Manhattan: bus #163 or 164 starts from 5:18 AM. Last at 00:35 am the next day
- From Manhattan to the hotel: (#163 or 164) starts from 6:00 AM. Last at 1:20 am the next day
From the hotel you can pay the driver by cash.
When In port authority Manhattan, buy your tickets at the automated machines, found in the facility near the gates, but remember to enter the:
- bus number
- the zone number which is 03 (zero three)
Cost in Feb 2010 was about 3$ one way

Another option: closer to Manhattan is the Super 8 hotel, North Bergen.
